What are the benefits of patient care at The Comprehensive Breast Center at Central Ohio Surgical Associates?

Continuity of Care

All too often, breast surgeons within the Columbus area have practiced for only a few years and then have chosen to leave. This leaves patients struggling to establish new care for their ongoing breast issues. The proven 40-year track record at COSA’s Metropolitan Surgery Division ensures stability to your patient’s breast care. Dr. Slam is committed to continuing this strong reliable history.

Freedom

As one of the only independent surgical practices within the Columbus area, you have the ability to choose where you wish to meet for an office consultation, where you complete your necessary imaging, where your surgical procedure will be completed, and where you wish to continue your ongoing breast follow-up.

Access to Leaders in the Field

Dr. Slam is one of the most experienced breast surgeons in Central Ohio. She was an integral force in Mount Carmel obtaining system-wide accreditation by the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). She holds many leadership positions in the hospital, including Chairman of the Surgery Department and Quality Director of the Breast Program, and within the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Surgeon-led Management

Dr. Slam feels strongly that the breast surgeon be involved in your care right from the beginning of an abnormal mammogram. At the time of an initial abnormal mammogram or mass, Dr. Slam performs a majority of the necessary needle breast biopsies for diagnosis. In the instance when she feels an Interventional Radiologist might perform a better biopsy due to equipment or mass location, she will continue to guide all management after pathology results are back. After diagnosis, Dr. Slam guides patients through the surgical aspect of their care, but is also very well educated in the both radiation and medical oncology aspects of breast cancer. She coordinates with these physicians for ongoing adjuvant therapy, but is also able to explain many aspects of this care in advance.

Personalized Care

Dr. Slam absolutely loves taking care of her patients, and she hopes it shows! She strives to remember most of her patients’ clinical and personal histories even without looking in the chart, and treats the patient as a person and not a number. The personal aspect of her patients’ care is the favorite part of her job and seeing her patients do well brings her great happiness.

Breast disease and breast cancer can be a very stressful time in your life. Dr. Slam and her team hope to navigate you through this time with honesty, compassion, and ease.
